While the 2008-2009 Comanche County budget is not yet official, most departments have agreed to a preliminary budget prepared by Central District Commissioner Ron Kirby. Kirby presented the tentative budget to the Comanche County Excise Board Tuesday. It has not been finalized because the county’s certified accountant, Chris Angel, is still waiting for the state to determine what property taxes utility companies owe the county. Kirby said the county is $52,000 over budget until the utility taxes are determined; last year, utilities paid just over $53,000. Whether the utility taxes make up the whole difference or not, the budget isn’t likely to change much, he said. “We have a pretty good grasp on what the budget should be,” he said. |

Comanche County commissioners approved a new security system as part of the consent agenda Monday. Comanche County Public Information Officer Chris Killmer said the “state-of-theart” system will employ many cameras and silent alarms. The system will cost about $27,000. Central District Commissioner Ron Kirby said the need for the new system was identified a few months ago. “Disturbances can occur at any time and at any place,” he said.

Super hot temperatures and tinder-dry conditions created a witch’s brew for area volunteer firefighters for the second straight day, as fire consumed several house trailers and forced closure of a U.S. highway Sunday in far western Comanche County. Volunteer firefighters from multiple jurisdictions joined to fight the blaze, including Indiahoma, Cove Acres, Paradise Valley, Meers, and Chattanooga volunteer fire departments, said Cache Fire Chief Dale Winham, whose department was first on scene. Walls will soon be rising at the construction site where the Great Plains Technology Center’s emergency operations/law enforcement training facility will open next summer. Jim Nisbett, superintendent of Great Plains, said almost all of the building’s foundation has been poured and the steel for the next phase of construction has been delivered. “Once the cranes get out here and start setting the steel, things will start happening pretty quick,” Nisbett said. |

The company that owns and operates Southwestern Medical Center has expressed a renewed interest in leasing Comanche County Memorial Hospital. Capella Healthcare made the announcement in a letter to Comanche County commissioners and the Comanche County Hospital Authority Thursday afternoon, offering $170 million to $180 million for a 40-year lease. In 2006 Capella made a similar offer, which the hospital board and the commissioners rejected. Officials at Memorial said they’re not interested in the new offer. At least one county commissioner expressed opposition, while the other two were withholding judgment on the proposal until they learn more.

The high price of a barrel of oil will shackle road repair in Comanche County and other counties throughout Oklahoma. Comanche County Public Information Officer Chris Killmer said SemMaterials, L.P., Tulsa, the contracted provider of road oils for the county, has rationed its supplies as of late last week. SemMaterials will be limiting indefinitely the amount of oil counties may purchase for road construction and maintenance purposes to 7,500 gallons . It takes about 5,000 gallons of CRS (patch) oil and 3,000 gallons of tack oil to “chip and seal” one mile of road. Click here to view KSWO-TV story |
