If current projections hold for revenues and expenditures, the Comanche County Fairgrounds Trust Authority will be facing a $40,000 shortfall in the 2009-10 fiscal year, trustee Mark Henry said at a regular monthly meeting Monday. Henry said projected revenues for the coming fiscal year will be down $375,000, largely because of the use tax that expired in the middle of the past fiscal year. The economy and the loss of certain events also played a part. Projected expenses will be $711,000, which is about what the fairgrounds had last year, he said. |

Comanche County commissioners approved an updated version of the county’s drug and alcohol policy for employees at their regular meeting Monday morning. The new policy is mostly just an update in language so written regulations will comply with current state and federal laws, according to Chris Kilmer, Comanche County public information officer. The only change some employees may notice is that all county departments will now conduct pre-hire drug testing on potential employees. Previously, some departments conducted pre-hire drug screening and others did not. “This just sets a standard across the county in each office,” Kilmer said. The new policy was prepared by Kilmer; Jerry Cude, legal counsel for the commissioners; and the county safety committee. The updated policy will take effect July 15. |

The Comanche County Fairgrounds Trust Authority took action Tuesday to replace the groundskeeper’s house at the fairgrounds. Trustee Ken Price said fellow trustee Ike Higdon located a mobile home near Sterling that can be purchased for $11,500, and Price estimates placing it on the lot and furnishing it will put the cost at $19,000. Interim Executive Director Robert Vaughn said it measures 16 feet by 70 feet and has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. It needs a storm door on the front and a few other small repairs. He said there is enough room between the existing house and the property line to put the mobile home, and the groundskeeper’s family can move into it so that they won’t be displaced when the present house is torn down. The Eastern District of Comanche County will demolish the structure. |

Robert Schulte will retire at the end of this month after serving more than 22 years as district attorney for Comanche and Cotton counties. Because of a painful back condition, which makes lengthy trials uncomfortable at the least, Schulte said he decided to submit his resignation to Gov. Brad Henry. Since Schulte is stepping down between elections, he said Henry will appoint a temporary replacement. “I’ve requested Fred Smith to take the position; he’s been with me since the first day; he and I have our own policies, and I think he would make an excellent DA,” Schulte said. |

Comanche County commissioners have given Sheriff Kenny Stradley the go-ahead to apply for a COPS Hiring Recovery Program grant through the U.S. Department of Justice. Stradley said if he receives the grant he will be able to hire three more deputies. “This is an opportunity to put more people on the streets, and we need to do that with the growth in the county,” he said. “We’re looking at entry-level officers — one per shift,” Major Ray Pyeatt said. |
