District 1: Road and Bridge Report (May 2012)

District 1’s road building crew is back on the ground and has begun work east of Lawton today, May 21, 2012, beginning the oil-and-chip process on county roads, weather permitting.

Today, the crew will be working on Bishop Road (from 45th Street to 60th Street) and 60th Street (from Bishop Road to Coombs Road). Tomorrow the work will be extended on Bishop Road out to 75th Street, while continuing work up to two miles south on 60th Street.

The prime oil will be laid first, followed by a minimum of a 3-5 hour waiting period. The longer the oil is able to dry, the sturdier the base on the road will be. Once the oil is laid and the waiting period is reached, the crews will start the chipping process.

As a reminder, citizens are asked to please avoid these roads if at all possible – the less traffic on the oil, the better it is for the road long-term. If a detour is not feasible, please slow down to 15 MPH while traveling on the prime oil. “Fresh Oil” signs will be posted in the areas where drivers will need to exercise caution.

This is only the start of oil-and-chip season, with more work planned. We will do our best to notify the community of areas being worked on, as well as the progress of this project.
