County makes $1.45M investment

Monday, 20 December 2010 10:04

Comanche County will make approximately $76,000 by paying off someone else’s debt. The amount will be collected in interest over the next three years after the Comanche County Board of Commissioners and Treasurer Barbara Burk agreed to pay a $1.45 million lawsuit settlement for Lawton Public Schools.

Comanche County currently has $2.6 million in home finance funds. Home finance accounts were created by U.S. Congress to assist low to moderate income families with home mortgages; however the money available is rarely used due to current interest rates.

Comanche County raised nearly $1,000 today at its annual chili cook-off fundraiser for United Way. The event capped off a series of smaller fundraisers in which County employees were able to raise a total of about $1,300 for this year’s United Way campaign.

The chili cook-off featured 15 pots of chili, ranging from mild, to medium and even a few “HOT” batches. Jim Davidson, maintenance director, was selected as this year’s champion with an interesting blend of Cajun ingredients. County Clerk Earlene Shriver came in a close second, and Lynn Bentley, purchasing department, rounded out the top 3 entries.
